HMD Global is holding an event in India today where the company will announce a brand new Nokia phone. Some reports hours ahead of the launch event now make it clear that the company will launch the Nokia 2.2 Android One phone.
A new Nokia phone will be announced today in India and it now seems it will be the Nokia 2.2. Up until yesterday, it was rumoured that HMD would announce the Nokia 6.2, but a new report and a render posted by a popular tipster just hours ahead of launch now suggest it could be called the Nokia 2.2 instead. HMD has managed to keep a pretty tight lid on the upcoming Nokia phone and has only teased a few features about the device such as its waterdrop notch, Google Asssistant button and a single rear camera with Night Mode.
If it is the Nokia 2.2 as a new report by NokiaPowerUser and a render by Evan Blass suggest, then we expect it to be an entry-level Android One device that should cost well under Rs 10,000. If HMD announces the Nokia 6.2 as well, we expect the price to be close to the Nokia 6.1 i.e. around Rs 16,999.
Nokia 2.2/ Nokia 6.2 expected specs
Tipster Evan Blass just tweeted an official render of the Nokia 2.2 that reveals the design from the front and back, which also keeps in line with what HMD has been teasing over the past few days. The Nokia 2.2 will come with a waterdrop display similar to the Nokia 4.2 and Nokia 3.2. The rear panel looks to be a plastic unibody shell and HMD may allow you to interchange covers as the company teases “customisability.”
Like the Nokia 4.2 and Nokia 3.2, the Nokia 2.2 will come with a dedicated Google Assistant button, which the company confirmed in a teaser. It may also get a LED notification light power button as well as face unlock, which would be nice to see in an entry-level phone.
The hardware is tricky to determine. A report by NPU claims that the phone could come in 2GB + 16GB and 3GB + 32GB memory and storage configuration. Notably, unlike the Nokia 2.1 which was an Android Go device, the Nokia 2.2 is expected to be an Android One phone which means you can expect the full experience of stock Android Pie rather than a stripped down version that comes with Android Go.
If HMD launches the Nokia 6.2 as well, rumours in the past suggest it will pack a Snapdragon 632 chipset paired with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The handset is also tipped to come with dual rear cameras.
The Nokia 6.2 will come with stock Android Pie as part of the Android One program. In just a few hours, we will know the exact nature of this new Nokia phone. HMD is also hosting an event in Italy today, which should see the international launch of the same phone. Additionally, the company could also announce the availability of the Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 1 Plus in India.
